Who We Are

Unearth and Empower Communities is a 501 c3 non-profit organization creating opportunities to unearth potential and empower people one community at a time.

Background

The dream started in 2008 at Willard Elementary in Compton, where Sara Bomani volunteered in her friend’s classroom to teach arts education to 3rd graders.  Community Arts: Re-Imagining Education (C.A.R.E.) was born two years later in 2010 after Bomani and Jennifer Alvarado met while working on their Master degrees at California State University, Long Beach.

Together contributing over 400 hours of service, they created curriculum and implemented summer art workshops and in-school art classes for hundreds of local inner-city students from Compton, Paramount and Long Beach. In partnership with The Compton Initiative & Emmanuel Reformed Church, Bomani organized, designed and painted over 70 murals at 10 public schools in the Compton Unified School District with the help of hundreds of community volunteers.

In 2011, after a gathering of like-minded individuals at City Church of Compton, conversations concerning the community ensued to establish interdependent partnerships among city residents, officials, organizations and businesses. Bomani and her husband left the meeting inspired. C.A.R.E.’s arts education programming was thriving; however, after researching the statistics and witnessing the challenges surrounding education, crime, poverty and unemployment, an expanded vision seemed necessary.  In May 2013, Unearth and Empower Communities was born.
